Evident Capture privacy summary
Version 1.0 · Last updated September 1, 2026
Evident Capture is a browser extension for teachers with an Evident account. This page summarizes what it can access and where data goes; the Evident privacy policy governs in full.
- What the extension can access
- Nothing, until you click. The extension has no access to your browsing history and requests no permission to read all websites. When you press Quote or Screenshot in the popup, it reads the current tab's title, address, your highlighted text, or a screenshot of the visible page — that one time, on that one tab.
- Where captured data goes
- Only to your Evident account, over encrypted connections. You crop or confirm every screenshot before it uploads, and only the region you confirm is uploaded. The page's title and address are saved alongside the note, so each piece of evidence can be traced back to its source. The extension contains no advertising, no third-party analytics, and no trackers.
- What stays on your device
- Your sign-in session, a cached copy of your student list, and any entries made while offline (they sync to your account when you reconnect). Your display preferences follow your Chrome profile, so they travel with you to your other computers. Signing out of the extension deletes everything tied to your account.
- Retention and deletion
- Data captured with the extension follows the same retention and deletion rules as data entered on evidentk12.com, including the 30-day hard-deletion window for removed evidence. See the privacy policy and security overview.
- For school administrators
- Extension sessions are separate from web sessions, revocable independently, and revoked automatically when an account is deactivated. Organizations can disable extension access for all of their members. The extension introduces no new sub-processors. For allowlisting, the extension ID, permission justifications, and Google Admin console steps are on the IT approval sheet.
